Our first day on the bus to Mexico was long but not too uncomfortable and we reached San Salvador in El Salvador early evening. Earlier that day we had travelled out of Nicaragua from Managua all the way through Honduras with no problems. As it is meant to be one of the most violent cities in the world, we stayed in the Tica bus hotel, only venturing out once in a taxi with two Danes that had been on our bus and invited us to come and see a bit of the city with them. Initially our taxi driver seemed a bit confused as to what we wanted to see but he soon warmed up and took us to the places where Oscar Romero was shot and buried.
We went to bed pretty early (8pm) because our next leg of the journey to Mexico began at 5am again. I woke up to Ellie: "Oh no, oh shit, it´s ten o´clock, we´ve missed the bus!" and after a brief moment where I believed her, I did the maths and worked out we would have had to have slept for fourteen hours solid for that to be the case. It was in fact 10pm and we´d been asleep for two hours, not fourteen, and hadn´t missed the bus! By 10AM! we were 5 hours into the next part of the journey!
