Greetings from the small but perfectly formed Tasmania!

A (very fast, due to some off-roading by our great driver) bus journey from Launceston saw us arrive in the Capital of Tasmania, Hobart! We decided to carry on the theme of booking a YHA hostel as they have proved to be great value and clean rooms with many discounts.  However........our Hostel unfortunately was 2 and a half km's out of town and was like a motel set up but the common room was like an old village hall which just smelt of old moth balls.......not the best but we would make do.

We have picked up the habit of venturing to the capital of each country we visit and each time (apart from Paris) we have been disappointed.  This time proved to be no exception as due to the weather we haven't been able to do a lot in Hobart apart from shopping as we could dive in and out of shops when the weather really turned bad.

But what a shop! Jamie bought himself a new travelling hat.....for 4 quid, check out the pics!

Even the internet world turned against us as only about 3 people have it in Hobart.  Poor Heather was panicking that she hadn't read her emails for over 48 hours!!

Adam had got us hooked on some of the local beer that was brewed in Tassie called Boags.  So we decided that we would go out to find a shop and buy some and drink them back at the hostel.  Well we walked for an hour and went into every supermarket looking for this special beer.  Little did we know that you could only buy it from bottle shops and no other store sells them.  A little down but not out we decided that we would get a pint from a pub that has live music.  Bingo, we found the Queens Head!  A band was playing and they had beer on tap.  We came in from out of the cold, settled down, took one sip and then the band immediately stopped playing, the pub emptied and we were rushed into drinking our one and only beer of the night.......Hobart is not a party scene!!

On our second night we met another couple staying in the hostel and got talking to find out they had been staying in Melbourne and had just arrived in Tasmania. When we got talking some more we got onto a story of how they had ended up in a pub in St Kilda and got talking to a guy that worked in the Cadbury's factory. "Oh that's where Adam works" (Our friend from Melbourne) I think his name was Adam, he had a Geordie accent........oh my god it did actually turn out to be Adam!! There is only one......and what a bloody small world!!

We decided to take on this couple at table tennis and yes, the Ruby Street clan won handsomely!!

On our final day, we decided to take a bus trip to Sandy Bay which is home to the richer people of Hobart, with fancy yacht's lining its bay. Again it was a horrible day so we decided to take a look into the casino and before we knew it $2 had fallen into the machine........we should have stopped when we were 80 cent up but we didn't and lost $2.80..............a whopping 50p!

Due to the weather there are only a few piccys but enjoy them anyway!

I concur...
with your national capital theory. I am usually disappointed by capitals as well. Hmmm, that sucks about the band. Better luck next time!
