Our first morning in Mexico City and we didnīt know what to do. We decided to put a few things in the backpack and start walking. There was no info in the hotel so we werenīt too sure what way to go or anything!
We walked for about half an hour and came across a massive monument dedicated to the Mexican Revolution and Independence from Spain, thereīs some photos attached of this blog for you all to see.
However, after seeing this monument and finding a Museum dedicated to it, we were lost...there was nothing else to do...seriously! We asked numerous people for a tourist office but no one knew where it was. So we walked to about 10 different newsagents trying to buy a map. Eventually we came across one, unfortunately, the map was size of Wicklow when opened up, so it didnīt really help us blend in! And just when things couldnīt get much worse.....a bird shat on Eoin!
We were well and truly heartbroken...surely this couldnīt be Mexico City. We turned around to see a large red open top bus....our saviour....some tourist things to do!! After waiting half an hour for the the next bus we got on and sat back waiting to be entertained by the sights and sounds.
Iīm not joking when I say the best bit was when we went through a tunnel. Oh and Mexicans have a love for Fountains. Every possible event in Mexican history is commemorated with a fountain! I lost count after 12!!
Starting to look rude and beginning to nod off, we eventually woke up when we entered the city centre. So we got off and strolled around. We found a few good places to eat, and felt a bit more like world trvellers!
We found our way back to the hotel and decided on a few drinks in a local bar. We were given a few drinks called Mesclas, which are basically a very strong Tequila....needless to say, it knocked us both sideways!! So after 2 of these, 1 of each of the 4 beers available and 2 Rum & cokes we stumbled into the street and took some barely visible photos in front of some monuments (attached)
I wonīt go into too much detail, but we really disliked Mexico City, it was big, dirty, very impersonal, not aimed at tourists and for fans of Billy Connolly...."it smells like shite!" We decided to stay one more night in the hotel so we could find some more info about moving on. We decided on Guadalajara as it looked good in the guide book and set about getting the bus and accomodation sorted!
