After initially planning on avoiding Costa Rica altogeather, i was convinced by the always eloquent Paul that a trip into the Corcobada National Park would treat us to some wildlife (especially the famous Oso Blanco), an aspect that we seemed to be missing..

So after one of my more miserable bus trips (and this was in a luxury air-conned bus - go figure!) we arrived in Puerto Jimanez, on the Oso peninsula. This town was somewhat reminissant of Puerto Limpira, but marginally smaller. Unfortunately, we arrived in the dark, and discovered that out hiking plans were screwed in a number of ways:

°The pick-up to the national park left at 6 the next morning, and we had no food/tent/bookings
°The track we wanted to do was impassable, due to the rainy season
°There was no wildlife, as it was the rainy season. CR> near/death experience no. 1
CR> near/death experience no. 1
.

So we spent a day biking around the beaches (including an abortive attempt to drag race down the local airfield runway - as we we heading to one end, a local came sprinting at us, yelling that we were 'loco' (solo un poco loco?) and i'm sure much worse, and that we we were about to be run over by a plane. Now that would be embarasing! After hearing him, translating what he had to say (none too quickly) we looked over our sholders to see a plane touching down at the other end of the runway.. Our quick-fire escape was routed directly past the 'No Entry for unauthorised people' sign that apparently we had missed..

Anyway, the next day we headed off to the national park for a day trek where we discovered that the rumours of no wildlife were very correct. A couple of exciting moments though - Paul managed to see a snake, and ran squeiling like a girl into the yonder (we later discovered that it was a harmless, even toothless variety of snake), and James managed a semi-nude river crossing. Awesome.
