OK, i must admit the allure of politial unrest was the driving factor behind this move, but nonetheless, i discovered the Mexico that is real, and not just what the Americans want it to be..
Needless to say, as with all my plans, it didn't quite go to plan - the overnight bus trip, followed by two hugely exhilerating days in DF (to us locals) spent battling Giardia, which left me a few extra days to fill before starting school (as it can only start on a monday)
Anyway, headed out to possibly the greatest bar in the world - tin shack, possibly held up by all the crap on the walls/ceiling (including several bikes, and one chainsaw!!) to watch a great Ska/reggae band.. Around 20 people on stage all going crazy, but an awesome spectacle, and great sound! Shame the camera was at home that night! Honourable mention to the band that followed them up, playing some crazy rock riffs, all the time in crazy mexican wrestling masks! -unfortunately the nearly-falling-asleep necessitated home time before they really got going.
So after 4 hrs sleep headed off on a day hike with Molly, an American girl i'd convinced to come, on a 20 km day hike up to Pase de Cortez - the pass that Cortez took through the volcanoes to invade DF, 500ish years ago.. A great idea, despite the lack of fitness, altitude (finished around 4500m), and shitty weather.. Quite how we made it is unexplained, but nonetheless i think we did, despite the lack of a decent view, and the van trip home was possibly the most pleasurabe i've ever had
So, back to DF for some learning to speak to these crazy ppl..
Managed to find myself in the middle of one of the much-anticipated riots in the zocalo, where (i think) we were chanting for an end to electoral fraud, and the left-wing guy to be proclaimed president. Regardless, managed to find myself on the end of a (possibly ricocheted) bb-gun bullet, so managed to cross 'get shot' off my list of things to do!! Always a positive to cross the hard (and potentilly lethal) ones off first.
My homestay was a bit of a disapointment, basically left to my devices, and catered for as though i was in a hotel, but the course was great! Can certainly get by now, and with sentences, too, rather than the usual point, say a (any?) noun, and hope for the best!
Unfortuanately Paul turned up around thursday suffering from what seems to be a hangover from a months-worth of excess! A night at the mexican wrestling, acompanied by a near (unintentional -he'd forgotten he was wearing his wrestling gimp mask) 7-11 holdup by P, and we're on our way to cuba!
