So today saw us leave the truck behind for 4x4's and we headed into the Ngorongoro Crater conservation area. Ascended high into cloud at the crater rim before descending down to the crater floor; spectacular scenery for as far as the eye could see.

Entered the area about 0700 and by 0930 had found a pride of lions chilling out and posing nicely next to the track for us. The Serengeti and Ngorongoro areas do not allow vehicles to leave the tracks, I can understand why but it was a little frustrating when we could see animals off in the distance and were unable to get any closer to them.

The cloud base soon burnt off and saw masses of animals in the crater, the thousands of wildebeest playing follow the leader was very impressive.

Had a packed lunch next to a watering hole with several hippo's, the Black Kite's were obviously well used to this being used as a foodstop by tourists and skilfully dived down to snatch foodstuffs from peoples hands. These a massive birds of prey and we had been warned beforehand and sensibly stayed in the vehicles...others did not heed the warning and some were left with scratches and bruising.

About 2pm headed off back out the crater towards the Serengeti plains, a very long, bumpy and somewhat treacherous track - we passed an overturned truck on the way there.

The plains were incredible, very beautiful. There was a little rain which you could literally smell in the air and made for some spectacular cloud formations which I hope come through in the photographs.

Campsite was literally in the bush, no fences, no armed guards - nothing between us and the animals. The noises that can be heard from the tent are if anything, a little unnerving. Real safari.
