We caught the airport shuttle two hours south to Byron Bay a few days early so we could experience the place before the festival crowds descended on the town and so it was that we arrived to heavy showers late in the afternoon.  After checking in to our accomodation it was dark and having spent the lions share of the day in transit we crashed out early.  The following day began in beautiful sunshine so we woke early and strolled into town to check out the local scene and to catch some rays on the beach.  It has to be said that Byron Bay is a beautiful place, filled with charm and character and we strolled around town, had a stylish and tasty breakfast before relaxing on the beach in the sun until the afternoon.  We had a few days in Byron before we were due to join a music festival here and it was a another blissful holiday experience spent relaxing in the sun, catching the odd cinema show, wandering around the shops and eating a variety of delicious foods in the plethora of sensational restaurants located there.  I took an early morning walk up to the lighthouse that marks Australia most easterly point with some friends at sunrise and despite it being horrifically early and raining when we left, by the time we had reached the lighthouse the skies were beginning to clear and we were afforded a clear view of the surrounding area which was both refreshing and exhilarating.  Time passes quickly here, it's just so easy to enjoy doing absolutely nothing when you are surrounded by such natural beauty and in such a relaxing atmosphere that before we knew it, it was time to join the party goers as they converged on Byron for the festival.  If you have never been to Byron Bay and you find yourself on the east coast of Australia with time on your hands, make sure you make it a priority to visit this beautiful place, it is without doubt one of the highlights of our Australian beach experiences and the friendly holiday atmosphere guarantees a calm and contented stay.
