I had wanted to go to visit northern Argentina but for some reason all of the buses from San Pedro were booked up so I decided to migrate south for some beach action. Spent 16 hours on a bus down (so far the longest yet) but arrived at a very nice 12pm, much better than the usual 5am or worse. Having been to a few hostels and houses to try to find a place to stay a kind lady in one place phoned up her friend who then even came to meet me on the street to take me to her house and I ended up staying with a family for a few nights which was quite a nice change. It also meant I could actually cook for myself and not spend loads of money on eating out the whole time (I also managed to develop an unhealthy taste for dulce de leche (a very sweet caramel spread) which needs to be stopped!).

Quite a nice town, very modern with plenty of supermarkets and even shopping malls which was nice to be around. Very strange to see shops displaying 'Summer '09' in the windows; I thought it was just a hot winter this year!
Went to the beach a few times which was nothing particularly special. I also went inland a bit up the river Elqui valley to the Pisco (alcoholic spirit) producing region of the country. Really pretty scenery but absolutely nothing to do so I spent about 30 mins there after a 2 hours bus and got straight back on it. Bit of a filler town this as I wait to go to Mendoza next for christmas.
