Today dawns with the same gloominess as yesterday but quickly improves its mood and, before long, is bright and sunny with less than gale-force winds - a rarity in Wellington.
By this time the weather is genuinely bearable, for October, and the lunchtime joggers chug along the waterfront. We decide to walk home around the Eastern Bays, which proves to be a rather pleasant 90 minute journey.
As a longtime resident of Wellington, I am surprised by the amount of change that has taken place during the seven years I've been away, and even in the three and a half years since Jane and I were last here. It seems that a new restaurant or apartment block has popped up on just about every familiar corner. This is a positive sign of course, and most of the new developments are attractive, but it feels less and less like 'my city'.
In the evening, Jane and I bus back into town to meet some of my old school chums: David, Sam and his wife Toni, and Layton. We have a few beers and reminisce about the old days, including a few that I don't remember, for one reason or another. Sam invites us back to his house, where we spin some more yarns and watch a bit of the cricket on TV.
