I drag myself up at 8.30 in order to meet the 9am breakfast deadline and force down more thoroughly mediocre scrambled eggs and toast. The Cleeve Hill track again beckons and I decide to charge directly up to the summit without regard for trail or track. This proves fairly easy and I reach the peak in about 10 minutes but slightly short of breath. At the top of the hill is a plateau and the 17th hole of a golf course that continues on down the other side.

Todays game is against Kingsholm, who plaz at a ground in a village called Sandhurst. Getting there is quite a challenge. The motorway becomes a suburban road, which becomes a side street, which becomes a one-lane pathway that finallz expands into a little village with a cricket ground. The ground is very nice, with an old church peering over one side and an expanse of farmland over the other. Our opponents play their two tall West Indian professionals, the taller of whom is apparently an 87mph fast bowler. Miraculously we get both of them out for ducks, both caught at long off unable to resist the super-loopy bowling of Mike Thomas. They still rattle up 214 from their 40 overs. I bat at 3 and score a quickfire 45 off 40 balls. Both West Indians bowl but at a much reduced pace from normal, I would guess. We end up around 60 runs short but put in a brave effort.

A good-sized barbeque follows and then a fines session at which the Kingsholm Club president makes a very drunken speech and our president, Alfred, is suckered into buying a hamper of St. Lucian delicacies for 50 pounds.
