We have a few hours to kill before our next outing (Pirannha fishing and Caiman spotting). We are staying at an ecoresort called Tiwa which is situated on the River Negro. The river gets its name from its color--yes, it is literally black (a product of the tannic acids found in the water).

We arrived without too much trouble from Manaus, crossing by motor boat. We did have to wait out a local storm, which they seem to have daily here during rainy season. There is usually about 3 hours of sunny weather followed by sporadic showers--ok, sometimes constant rain. The only other troublesome aspect of the trip has been with our mastery of Portuguese, or lack thereof. We often catch ourselves inadvertently responding to simple questions in French or Spanish.

The resort houses about 40 or so guests, 2 parrots, and a mischevious monkey. Today, at lunch, the monkey repeatedly stole helpings of bread and soup from some poor West German lady. And yesterday, the monkey fondled Jama. Hahaha.

We are off tomorrow to the second leg of our Amazon visit.  A more remote resort which takes about a 13 hour boat ride to get to. Wish us luck catching the boat which leaves at 6 am.
