Where I stayed
Rio is full of super fit people, always running, doing exercise at many pieces of gym equipment lining the beach. It is clean, no stray dogs (only pet dogs).
The weather had turned it up for us, unusual for this time of year it was late 20's, early 30s ... Perfect!! We spent the the first few days chilling out in ipanema (the suburb of rio we were staying), going to the beautiful beaches and watching people play soccer & volleyball, shopping and drinking with fellow travelers.
We decided it was time to do some touristy things, so booked in to do a favela tour. It was interesting to see the favelas and walk through the neighborhoods. We went to two different favelas, both v different. The first was a large favela which had only recently been taken over by the police, only a few months earlier it was run by gangs. The second a smaller favela, which was in a valley, house upon house built upon each other, some so far down they get very little daylight.
We lastly visited a school, which the tour company finances. kids from the favelas get to go to this school to help educate them and try to help them not be caught up in gangs. An amazing tour, definitely one not to be missed.
