On the first day we were there, Alenka took us to a park where we feasted on some horse. I thought that I had satisfied my craving for exotic meats in China, but when Alenka pointed out the fast food joint where you could pick up a horse burger for a few Euros, I was there. To me and Nadja, eating a horse burger was something out of the ordinary, as it probably is for most of you reading this at the moment. But to the Slovenes, a horse burger is their equivalant to a 3am kebab and a can of coke. While me and Nads made a big deal of devouring our horse burger (taking pictures, asking what type of horse, etc) the people around us just happily munched on their horse patties filled with chilli sauce
On our second day in Ljubljiana, we walked around the city and checked out some sites. It is a really beautiful city, with plenty to do. That night, we checked out the local night scene with Alenka and Matiaj (I reckon it might be spelt like this). It was cool, we started with a few brandies in Alenkas apartment, followed by a few tinnies in a local park (it is not against the law to drink openley in public places throughout most of Europe). After that we made our way to a club. At the beginning we were still a little sober and self-concious, we got a couple of drinks and swayed from left to right together while everyone on the dancefloor was in full swing. A few pints later, and were getting jiggy to some Slovene music. We ended up stumbling out of the club at 5am, one of the last groups to be kicked out.
On Saturday, Alenka took us out to her mums house in a little village where we filled up on some really tasty local food. It was a pity that we were all so hung over because her mum would have liked us to also fill up on some of her home-made schnaps and wine. After lunch, we walked around the farm and checked out some of the animals. We went into one of the barns and were greeted by a massive bull, a cow and a baby calf
After the awesome feast at Alenkas mums house, we went to the Postonjian caves. This cave system was massive and equally impressive. I had read about these special animals that live in the caves called "human fish". I was really exicited about seeing these but was a little upset when I found out that my vision of a half-human/half-fish Slovene speaking creature was completely inaccurate and istead the human fish were no cooler looking than those walking mexican fish that you can buy back home.
After our trip through the caves, Alenka and Matiaj took us to an underground tunnel that apparantly was built by Italians in the second world war. This was definately of the tourist track and is only known by a few locals. Once Matiaj got the torch to work, we all walked into the tunnel. At this time, everyone put on a brave face but it wasnt until a day later that we all confessed to nearly soiling ourselves in fear
On the final day we took it easy and relaxed. Me and Nads wanted to show our appreciation to Alenka and Mariataj by cooking them an authentic Aussie meal.We couldnt come up with an authentic Aussie meal so we settled for a stir-fry.
We left Ljubljiana today and headed to Bled. This town is also nice with scenic alps, a big lake and a kick ass castle above the town. Nads and I rented a row boat and I had a crack at rowing us to a small island in the middle of the lake.
Tomorrow we are off to Budapest.
