Entry 9 of 26 | show all | print this entry

Arrived in Iquitos after a very, very hard day in a fast boat. I really wish I had of taken the slow boat again (Its sooooo more relaxing). We were stuffed into a tiny little sardine tin of a boat, with not even enough room for all on board and then roasted from the sun all day, I now have a half moon sunburnt face and my knees will probably never function properly again. At one stage the boats steering snapped and we had a high-speed wipeout. One of the bigger guys who had venturned onto the roof of the boat for more leg room would surley of crapped himself, I was sure he was gone, but he venturned back into the cabin a little pale faced. The damage took some time to fix in which time we casually floated back down the Amazon in the entrily opposite direction to our destination. We arrived two hours late after 12 hours of hell to a bunch of touts crowding the pier.
I stayed at the Hobo Hideout which has a few cool birds flapping around the place but is also decked out in loads of animal skins, furs and bones - not for animal lovers!
Anyway I quite like Iquitos. The local square Plaza de Armas is very busy and there are quite a few restaurants etc. Then there is the river bank street of Malecon Maldonado that really gets going at night with loads of buskers, music and pickpockets.
We ate at the Yellow Rose of Texas a few times, which is run by a pretty brash Texan who doesn't stop yapping, but the food there is awesome.
Iquitos is the biggest major city in the world without any road links. The only way out is by plane or by Boat. I have decided to fly out to Lima to make up some time and ground and because after the ordeal of my last boat ride I honestly cant be arsed.
