The first spot on the Bay of Plenty that I stopped at was Whakatane which was a quaint little peaceful town on the natural harbour at the mounth of the Whakaten River. After having a walk through town I drove out to the beach where there were a few sufers carving up on the small waves

I arrived into Ohope Beach 7km east of Whakatane and into quintessential Kiwi holiday territory. Staying in the type of place where people seem to get purposefully stuck. Even the aging pale toned camper vans have had their ability to leave halted by either being boxed in or having their wheels removed permanently.

The beach was peppered with people but with a lack of numbers to give yourself plenty of space to yourself despite the blue skies and hot hot heat. I took a swim shortly after arriving in relatively warm water by NZ standards and my only drama came when I stepped onto a bloody big crab who tried to take my toe away with him.
