Veliko Tarnovo was a much larger town than I had imagined but it was nonetheless set in an astonishing location. The U-shaped winding cliffs around the Yantra River lock in the Aveta Gora Park across the footbridge. The town itself dramatically starts at cliff edge and its cobblestone streets fall into line behind. The town also has the massive Tsarevets Citadel to the left of the town in the hills, which is itself almost completley surrounded by cliffs leading down to the river. The citadel at one point contained the ruins of the Royal Palace that at one stage in its history was the home to 22 successive Kings.
The town itself had a very youthful hustle and bustle to it due to the large University here.
