After arriving to Canakkale and spending the remainder of the night in the hostel and having dinner we awoke the next morning to take a short bus ride 20km away to the ruins of Troy. There were actually nine versions of Troy built on top of each other. There was also a recreation of the Trojan Horse at the site.
The next day we woke really early to take our bus to Gallipoli. We had an awesome guide named Ali whose grand father had fought and died in the war. He had a huge amount of respect for New Zealand and Australia and claimed that the fighting here was the birth of 3 nations.
It was pretty amazing to see where the botched landing had stranded the Anzac troops on the beaches of the Dardanelles, with the step hills almost impossible to capture. Ali led us through Anzac Cove, Lone Pine, Chunik Bar and many of the remaining trenches.
