Fes was an extraordinary place to lost amongst the hillside bazaars, workshops, restaurants, mosques, markets, schools and dye pits inside the medina of Fez El Bali that acts as a giant labyrinth.
At first we were content at making our way cautiously through the more well trodden parts of the medina. But eventually we paid a guide to show us through the more complex areas of the community. We were take to a tannery, where they were dying hundreds of animal skins in different natural dyes.

We also visited a small primary school, consisting of one room with kids aged from 4-8. We visited a few mosques that would normally be closed to foreign tourists and we also visited a few workshops where the locals were carving ornate Islamic woodcarvings. Despite telling the guide at the start of the tour we didn't want to visit any shops, an easy way for the guides to gain extra commission, we ended up in a carpet shop. Anyway I ended up walking out the proud owner of a blue and white Moroccan rug, which I had to barter pretty hard t get for the price I wanted. I also ended up going back to the medina and picking up a bongo drum so I could torture Emilie with my crap playing skills. Emilie ended up having henna tattoos on both of her hands that looked pretty awesome and lasted for about a month.
