Slow to get going this morning. I think I am fighting off a cold. Really hope I don't get sick.
First stop today was the Museum of London. It was right at the top of things I want to see - the small part that is currently open was good. Unfortunately a lot of what I wanted to see is under renovation, and won't re-open until 2009. Another thing on my list were the monument - closes every 100 years or so for maintenance - closed. Another thing on my list - hear Big Ben ring - only stops every 70 years or so I've heard for maintenance - it's currently being maintained so not ringing. Oh well, what ya gonna do.
4:10 p.m.
Well, I'm sitting outside the Imperial War Museum. This place is wonderful and horrible all at the same time. I've spent the past 4 or so hours in there - I didn't realize it was so late, and that I hadn't eaten lunch. I guess war and misery are appetite suppressants.
The WW1 trench and WW2 blitz 'experiences' were very good. Again with the smells of history. Do you think they just poured urine in the trench exhibit, or does someone have a job in a lab creating the smell of urine? Lots of uniforms, planes, tanks etc. The exhibit that disturbed me more than everything else was the holocaust exhibit. It was profoundly moving and disturbing - I thought about bailing half way through but somehow couldn't. I walked through the exhibit but didn't look at or listen to quite a bit of the last half of it. I just couldn't do it anymore. It's simply too much - not in a time way, but in that mental and emotional me had seen enough pain, misery and evil.
Off to find some dinner. I can't get a map of the buses which is frustrating, but if I can find a bus to where I'm going I much prefer it. I sit up top if it's a double decker and watch the views go by.
