Off to York this morning. I must say I think I was expecting more of the trains. They run frequently and generally on time to many destinations it seems, but they are crowded, there's not enough room for luggage, and I got stuck in the crappiest seat. I met a very nice lady to chat with though. She's from the town of Chesterfield, and she pointed out and told me the story of the towns crooked church spire - something about a virgin and a wedding.
Got to York and found my b & b - very handy to the train station. It's apparently still a working convent. Very nice place - good choice.
Went for a short walk along the walls - saw some dogs playing. The section I walked didn't have a railing so was a bit intimidating, but cool.
Quiet evening - watched some English tv in the common room, and to bed after a long talk with Laura.
Can't post this because wifi at the convent is broken.

virgin and a wedding?
Do you remember more of the story? It sounds like it could be an interesting story...but I thought that the church preferred to marry virgins? What does it say when a spire is effected by a virgin getting married?
If you don't remember, try to remember the name of the church, town etc and I'll try to find something on the net as I'm sure I'm not the only one who is curious.
Glad you are having so much fun.
Re: virgin and a wedding?
I believe the name of the town was Chesterfield. The lady talked fast and with a thick english accent - sorry that's about all I got. --------------

Chesterfield church spire
A story of Chaucerian flavour. The spire was so amazed to hear of a virgin being married in the church that it developed its intricate twist in an attempt to see such a wonder with its own eyes. In a slightly amended version the Spire owes its twist to its admiration of a virtuous maiden of such beauty entering the church that the spire bowed in admiration, and could not resume its normal position.
I can't paste a photo here, but you can see the spire at http://www.chesterfieldparishchurch.org.uk/
Thanks Jillian - it's pretty neat and I wouldn't have looked at photos without your blog
Re: Chesterfield church spire
you're welcome. thanks for looking up the story
Another possible explanation
The lady also mentioned another possible explanation - the roof is very heavy because it is made of lead...
