Later than we expected, with newly purchased sandwiches on the dashboard, coffees in the cup holders and a bag of fruit on the back seat, we were finally on the road towards Cairns.
Now, Australia is a big, big country. In fact, it's the sixth largest country in the world, and Europe would fit inside it, with room to spare. The Sydney to Cairns journey is almost 1500 miles. Similar to driving from London to Moscow.
So, best get going then.
The first day, we got quite a few miles under our belts. In fact, we got to Gympie (snigger), which is about 100 miles north of Brisbane. There was little of great note to write about en route, although the scenery was pleasant. We stopped for a bite to eat at Freddo's Pies in Frederickton. The pie shop, it turns out, is widely considered to be home of the best pies in Australia and possibly the world. We don't know about that (sounds like it would be good fun to do the research though) but they were pretty damn tasty.
We kipped in the car and got going again reasonably early the following day. Again, there was little of blog-worthy note during the journey. In the evening, we bought some pizza from an outlet of 'Eagle Boys Pizza' in Townsville. It is possible that the pizza cravings which we were both experiencing were influenced by their frequent adverts (with the tag line "Did someone say pizza?") on the local radio stations that we were listening to. The only reason that this is worthy of mention is that we didn't order it without cheese. Jacob, despite the apprehension which accompanied his order, really enjoyed his first pizza with cheese. Kirsty, pretty much vegetarian when we left home, tucked in hungrily to the Barbecue Meat Lover's monster we received, smothered with bacon, ham, peperoni, spicy beef, sausage, chicken and meatballs. They say travel changes you, but we doubt that anyone would have seen this coming.
That night, we got to Cairns, decided that we may as well sleep in the car again and found ourselves a layby just outside the town. 1500 miles in two days. Not bad going, eh?
