The flight to Santiago was pleasant enough, although we had some problems with the fact that our reading lights didn't work and our televisions were somewhat intermittent. However, they were good enough for Kirsty to watch Hairspray and for Jacob to amuse himself with episodes of the Simpsons and Friends for several hours. We also slept a while and touched down in Santiago at around 9am. Yes, Santiago, over 1500 miles further south than our actual destination of Lima. Our round-the-world ticket lets us fly with various airlines, but unfortunately none of them operate a Mexico City to Lima flight. Ever. So we had to take the next best thing and fly from Mexico City to Santiago, wait for just over 12 hours and then fly back north to Lima. If you listen closely, you can hear the violent thump of our massive carbon footprints.

We had to spend our time in Santiago airside; we didn't even get to go outside. We explored our surroundings, dozed on some seats for a while, ate our sweets (purple Skittles in America apparently are grape flavour) , explored the duty free in more detail, poking around in the humidor room (not sure if they were convinced that we were likely to buy cases of Montecristos) and squirting ourselves with various perfume samples, deciding what we would buy from duty free on our last flight, went for some food and eventually we boarded our Lima bound plane at 9pm. Peru, here we come...
