Food in Russia
Going to a new country you never know if you are going to like the food in general. Some countries you pack your peanut butter and crackers for emergency rashions just in case.
In Russia we were able to give away our peanut butter as gifts since peanut butter is not available and the food fell between "Interesting" and what Americans would call "Comfort Food" . . . The smell of Beef Stroganoff was a predominant smell coming out of the hotel restaurant in the afternoon.
The party and banquet food (pictured above) were extravagant and fit for royalty.
Of interest at every buffet:
Breakfast ALWAYS had fresh Tomatoes and Cucumbers
Eggs, boiled, scrambled and multiple kinds of quiche with sausages and vegitables
Multiple kinds of sausage, although we did not see any bacon
Pickled Herring (every where, every meal)
Fruit & pastries with sweeten condensed milk
Lunch always had a variety of sausage
Beef Stroganoff (or other meat with gravy)
More fish dishes than meet (and pickled herring)
Vegetables, fresh, steamed or pickled
Dinner - Same as lunch with additional
meet dishes, sometimes chicken
Noodles, rice or several types of potatoes
At restaurants there was a wide variety of things that sounded great
Sometimes when you got them (as an American) you had to scratch your head.
Larry ordered a chicken sandwich . . . ??
I had a sandwich with salmon and fresh dill .. . yep had dill, the fish was raw
Good thing I like sushi.
We ordered an appetizer with pickled vegetables and
got a bread bowl full of fabulous pickled veggies
A wide variety, you name it.
For desert one night I had "Pineapple cream cheese ravioli" . . .
I could make this at home . . . it was tasty. . .
fried might have been better!
Overall, neither Larry nor I went hungry . . . .
and in fact the food was pretty tasty!
