I thought Chinese New Year would be a big thing in Singapore, having such a large Chinese population, and it was, but not to the extent I was expecting. I think the major issue is that Chinese New Year lasts for 2 whole weeks. New Year's day is just the beginning. The days leading up to the New Year are full of house cleaning and cleansing and preparations. The first few days of the New Year are dedicated to family visiting and lots of meals. In general the actual celebrations (parades and whatnot) seem to happen later in the two-week span.

Not being privy to this information beforehand, we booked our Recess Week travel plans around being in Singapore for New Year’s Eve, and not for any other time. As such, I missed the giant parade and other festivities. New Year’s Eve was fun, but not as lively as I expected. There was a giant stage, with lots going on, but it was all in Chinese and the audience didn’t really feel into it. There were fireworks, but they were minimal as they were set off in the middle of Chinatown with people everywhere beneath them. There were so many people selling food, toys, decorations, tiger paraphernalia, etc… Don’t get me wrong, there was a definite atmosphere that was cool to be a part of, it just wasn’t what I expected. That being said- I took lots of pictures, so this is a rare visual entry!
