When we woke up to our alarm at 5am we were a little bit on the edge about getting up (especially since it looked a bit cloudy and that could ruin the sunrise) but we managed to pull ourselves out of bed anyway. We of course took advantage of the showers at the campsite before we left (at which point we were glad we had ended up at a campground because we were skyping Luke, James` brother, at noon and didn`t want to look like such greasy bums).
We drove up to the carpark and then preceded on foot to the lighthouse in the dark with just my (James) head lamp for light which was very nice considering there were no railings on the path and it was a straight 100ft drop down to the rocks. We waited for the sun to rise and realized that we were about an hour early for sunrise but stuck it out nonetheless
On our way back to the van we saw a group of seals playing at the bottom of the cliff and Jackie jokingly suggested we climb down to get a better look, I always being the voice of reason and seeing how impossibly steep and covered with bush it was decided it was not a healthy idea.
After all the picture taking we headed out and then stopped at some random beach on the way. We ventured out on the rocks and almost got caught out there as the tide started coming in (good thing we're quick). Next we headed to a town called Owaka where we walked to a place called Jack`s blowhole (and took more pictures of course).
At noon we were supposed to skype my brother back home and wish him a happy birthday which we did thanks to a little cafe in Owaka (it being the only place in town with internet).
After skyping home we drove to `Cathedral Caves` and got some amazing pictures of caves that went really deep into the cliffs and are only accessible from the beach at low tide (unfortunately it was raining the entire time so we were soaked by the time we got back to the van).
We stopped at Curio bay and walked around a petrified forrest and saw a penguin that was hopping back up the rocks to it`s nest!! (our first live penguin, the first one we kind of stumbled upon earlier at the caves and it wasn`t very lively if you get my drift).
Once again this evening was spent on a little spot by the river!
