Well we woke up bright and early on the 17th, packed up our camper with our bags and then we all headed to the grocery store. After stocking up on all the essentials we gassed up and then headed back to Francis and Svetlanna's to say our goodbyes. We took a couple pictures by the van and then gave our hugs goodbye and went to leave. We wanted to make sure we had the right road typed into our GPS before we left but when we went to put it in our GPS shut off. We tried a couple more times and it shut off again. Thinking it might be the plug for the vehicle we went and plugged it into the computer and no luck there either!! So sure enough in true James and Jackie fashion something had gone wrong before we even got on the road!!!
Francis had to get a license translated for Svetlanna nearby where we bought the GPS so we headed out in his car with him and once he was done we went back to the pawn shop (thinking that of course once we got there it would work for them) and when they tried it it didn't work for them either, thank goodness, and we got a full refund
We had felt some relief from stress when we bought the GPS and felt we would be feeling all the stress along the road without it so James made the final decision and we went to buy a new one. We rationalized buying it by making sure it had maps for New Zealand as well and deciding we could bring it back to Canada and download maps for there and keep it for home.
Finally we made it back to their house to say our goodbyes again and we were off. We had to stop to get a couple more things and of course we got turned around and got a little lost because we set the GPS wrong but we got our bearings quickly and got on the right track.
After driving a couple hours (it was already around 5pm now) we checked out a picnic area we found in our handy free camping spots Francis gave us and decided it didn't really look like a place to camp and went into town. We drove around cheching prices for caravan parks for a while but they were all over $30 for the night and so we headed back out down the forest road and back to the picnic spot. There were a few campervans there now actually and it turned out to be the perfect spot for our first stop...and it was free!! So we got out our sausages and had some supper then read a little and were pretty much wiped from a long first day.
