Our second full day in Georgetown we also wandered around. We grabbed some lunch (which for Jackie ended up being cold chicken and rice with anchovies on it, didn't quite finish that meal) an then tried to find a bus that would take us to the Penang Hill. The guy at our hotel told us what street to go down and gave us a bus number to get on so when one stopped at an intersection by us we waved over and he opened the door for us. We asked about going to Penang Hill and he said it wasn't the right bus but he would take us to the terminal around the corner to get to it; then he told us the Hill was shut down for repairs, so we decided to go to the Botanical Gardens instead. We are pretty sure we could've still went to the hill as our hotel guy didn't say anything but we had planned to go to the gardens as well so no big deal. He showed us the right bus and after waiting at that terminal and then the next for a half hour each the bus went in and out of streets doing complete circles and weaving around everywhere it seemed, we got a good little tour of a part of town we wouldn't be visiting. Finally at the gardens as soon as we got off we noticed the swarm of monkeys at the entrance. The guy with a couple stalls was yelling at them and trying to scare them away...although he was selling peanuts, we believe, for people to give to the monkeys, silly man.
The Botanical Gardens was basically a big park. There were separate fenced off gardens for different types of plants but they were all locked up so we had to look through the fences and couldn't wander through them. There were also some cool little paths that lead up and down the stream that runs through the park. When we came out of those paths though and were taking a picture of James by an enormous tree we noticed a small dead monkey....it was really sad and not something we wanted to see.
Then we found a bench under a big tree to sit and read for a while on. This is where a pack of monkeys came up to us. James thinking he could scare them off started hissing at them, not smart cause the male monkey showed James he could hiss too and bared his teeth and gave James a much scarier hiss. We both jumped a little and became nervous, then the male hopped on one of the females for a quickie and then turned back to us. We were laughing at it but then it came at James and in a split second James was off with a crazy scared look on his face....leaving me sitting on the bench, laughing at him now. Not gonna lie though I was a bit nervous sitting there alone still surrounded by monkeys, but I just calmly got up and walked off, no hissing necessary! haha.
Then we found another place to sit and were safe for a while but eventually the monkeys came wandering back and we decided to get up and leave before they gave James any more trouble and he would have to really give it to them this time! Ha!
Finally we found a little hut with benches where we laid down and read till we both fell asleep, we were wiped after all the monkey business I guess.
Later we decided to walk to the street where we read was great for eating since it was only a few blocks away...more walking around. It wasn't quite supper so we stopped for some ice cream then went into the big mall there to look for some new sandals and check prices for a small laptop (we keep staying at places with free wi-fi but no computers and have to go out and pay to use a computer so we have decided it is worth it to invest in one).
When we were hungry we went back outside and as we had already walked past a small area with street stalls and the place was suppose to be 2km long with great places to eat we figured there had to be more along the way. So we walked, and we walked, and we walked some more. We were looking for street stalls where we could sample bits of everything but all we were finding were slightly pricey restaurants. Finally, realizing the only stalls were all the way back at the beginning we stopped somewhere finally. We are really having trouble with this ordering of food in Malaysia and usually don't understand what exactly we're getting till it comes out. We ended up with a small plate of noodles and vegetables but then a large plate of tiny fried batter shrimp that was fried and battered whole with the shell and everything on! haha, took us a while to get used to but after a bit munching on them wasn't so bad.
After supper we didn't want to take the time to wander around and try to figure out where to get the bus from so we decided it would probably take less time to just walk back. So we set out on our journey back and we actually came across some cool stuff along the way. We found a night market of street stalls not too far from where we were staying, of course it was our last night though! We also found a really nice Chinese temple and wandered through a bunch of back streets on our way.
Enough wandering for us though, time for some cool air and tea!
