Our first full day in Georgetown we decided to walk around and catch some sights; the first place we knew was pretty close and had heard about was Fort Cornwallis. It was blisteringly hot out and were thankful to see a tourist info place on the way so we stopped into the air-con building and grabbed some maps of town and other parts of Malaysia and just did a bit of research for a bit; then we went out to brave the heat on foot again. Fort Cornwallis is basically for brick walls with and empty church, a few bare rooms with the history of the place in them, a watch tower and lighthouse that we couldn't enter, some cannons and an old explosives store room. It was neat to look around and read about the British influence and the history of the place, then we moved on. We walked around the area a bit more surrounded by old colonial buildings and some great architecture...which we only barely noticed cz we were being blasted by the sun!
Then we took a break in our room out of the heat and tried to figure out some plans about how to get to the highlands. It seemed there was a cheap local bus that left from the mall near us and so we decided we would go to the mall and seek out tickets for the bus. We also had read about a street which was popular for night food and street stalls and thought we would catch a bus to there for supper.
We set out on foot again for the mall. When we got there though the information guy at the bus stop didn't seem to know of the company we were asking about and took us to a travel agent. That guy told us we had to take a bus south of Georgetown to book tickets, which we thought was odd since everything we had checked into said the bus left from the mall, so why would we have to take a bus so far away to just buy a ticket? They also let us know which bus to take to get to the street food place and since it wasn't quite supper yet we went to kill some time in the mall. It ended up being pretty good cause we picked up some new cheap glasses and a watch and there was a theater there and we ended up postponing our trip to the street food place for a night and buying tickets for a movie. We still had an hour till the movie so we went to grab some food; what we got wasn't exactly what we were expecting though. Out came a dish which was dark and soupy with chunks of every part of the chicken you could imagine! Haha, we dug through the chicken like surgeons trying to help each other pick the little bits of actual meat off the bone and made sure to eat all the crispy noodles as that was the bulk of the meal....good thing we were getting popcorn at the theater, which we were absolutely stoked for!!
We went to see Meet the Parents: Little Fockers; we first got a large popcorn but we were crushed when we realized they top it with some kind of sugar syrup here rather than piping hot butter, bummer. Oh well it was still OK and after our supper we chowed down. The movie was hilarious and such a good break for us after the previous days' events. Now we know what to do to chill us out after a bad day!
When the movie was over we followed the exit sign at the front of the theater (not back through the doors we came in) because the one other person in the theater went through there. It led to a long hallway with another exit sign which we went through, to our surprise it led us to the parking lot!! HAHA! How odd! There were signs all over though that led us back into the mall and we found our way out and set out on our walk back home.
