so i woke up in my car from the traffic at ~6:30am. tried to keep napping til about 8am when it's just too hot in the car. started driving around downtown papeete. all the shops are still closed. trying to find a breakfast place but no luck. i decided to drive around the island following the coastal road. passed by quite a few towns that i can't remember the names of. i also stopped at teahupo, the famed surf spot of tahiti. the waves in teahupo are known as the most powerful and the thickest, a 25 footer here will kill you as easily as a 45footer else where. but today it's totally calm, i won't get to see any big waves. i continued driving around, the further away from papeete the more rural it becomes. stopping at many villages, black sand beaches, and hiking up some waterfalls. i ended up at this village that is about the furthest from papeete. there is one grocery store in the village and i went in. they have all kinds of cooked food and bakery in there and i decided to have lunch in the grocery store. and to my surprise there are quite a few chinese dishes, and i saw that the store was run by chinese. i have heard from more than one person, that where ever you go, you will see chinese people. so far it's true of all the places i've been to. don't know if it's also true in africa. after lunch i continued touring the island. there are parts of the island that isn't accesible by car, but only by foot. i read the local travel guides i grabbed from the airport information booth, some of the hikes can take days! and you better have a guide. i am not so sure i want to backpack in this kind of heat and humidity. more driving and i arrived at the kitesurfer's beach. there were ~20 kites out. but this spot is for advanced kiter only. i am just a beginner so i didn't get my gear out, just watched. by now it's about dinner time and i am catching a 25min flight to the island called "huahine". (pronounced HOO-AH-HI-NAY) that will be my homebase for the next couple of days if i do decide to go island hopping (turns out i won't because i really like huahine)
