After a very early morning flight we made it to Cebu. Jumped in a taxi & found our hotel. A cheap but cute little place in a little street. We got straight into our rooms & had a few hours sleep before jumping back up for breakfast & then hit the streets.
We wandered in the general direction of the cathedrals & Magellan's Cross & managed to find them all & a few other things along the way. As it was Sunday both the cathedral & the Basilica were packed with patrons. We waited until the services had finished & had a wander through them both. Always amazes me the elaborate decorations & gold features inside the churches when the streets & houses are still so run down.
We found magellan's cross which isn't anything more than a wooden cross (not the original) but the painting on the ceiling above was quite spectacular.
After this we found our way across to the Fort San Pedro. Small as far as forts go but a nice little garden inside you could walk around.
Them we were off to check out the largest shopping centre in Cebu. And it is pretty damn big. Lucy & I had managed to forget to bring enough essential items for this warm climate....t-shirts & singlets. So we found a cheap little clothing store & went for it. I'm sure David was oh so thrilled to be waiting for us while we did our girly shop.
The next day we decided to head off in another direction & try & find the taoist temple. We successfully found the place only to be turned away by the security guard at the entrance. He told us only members were allowed in & we couldn't convince him to let us in anyway. David even tried to tell the guy he follow Tao
Then we jumped in a taxi & headed for Tops the 'lookout' over Cebu City. The taxi was a dead beat old car but it got us to the top of the mountain....only just. We did have to stop a couple of times to give the engine a rest but we got there in the end. It's a great view out across the city & you can see Mactan Island as well.
My friend Beth had also arrived after a long stint from Australia via Singapore. Her bags had gone missing tho, which wasn't good considering we had to jump aboard a yacht the next day & wouldn't be back on the island for 11 days. We decided if it hadn't arrived before 5pm then we'd head to the shops & pick up some things to get her by on the boat.
Thankfully it arrived that afternoon so we headed back out to the airport & picked them up before meeting up with David & Lucy again who had met up with the rest of the gang we'd be diving with for the next 11days. We grabbed some dinner at a little pizza place down the road from their hotel & then Beth & I made our way back to our hotel.
Tomorrow......a luxury yacht cruising round the South Visayas!!!
