I started a baseball team with the 5th and 6th graders a couple of weeks ago. Actually, I have an age range from 8 years old to 16 years old, which always makes it more fun when the 16 years is throwing the ball as hard as he can to the little guy.
Starting a baseball team is not as easy as I thought it would be. We take things for grant in the states because everything is very well organized: games, uniforms, equipment, kids not having to work, transportation. It amazing how many factors I have to throw into the equation just to start a baseball team. The other day not one player showed up to practice (first time that happened) and I was told the next day by the players that they had to unexpectedly work. THEY ARE 12 YEARS OLD, what kind of unexpected work do you have at that age
The players are great even if they are not the most well disciplined kids. With that said, I would like to turn this into more than just a baseball team but a well disciplined baseball team.
The Mexican Culture loves to cheer, dance and yell for their teams. I believe with the formation of this team there will be something to cheer about within the community. There are no organized teams in Laguna San Ignacio and I would love to give the kids an opportunity to leave the community and play against other local towns.
My biggest obstacle will be the consistency of the players. This is my only fear for the failure of this baseball team. I have had a complete team just about everyday but they always seem to be different players. Its very hard to have a baseball team when you don't know which players are going to show up.
My practice today consisted of 18 players. Not a bad turn out.
Ill attach some photos.
Wish me well.
