Where I stayed
At the campsite with my fellow campers
Summercamp is a music and arts festival held every summer in Chillicothe, Illinois. It is a three day festival in which music lovers and thrill seekers come to camp, listen to great music, get down, meet new people, and go wild for a few days. This year was the first year I've ever been to Summercamp, despite wanting to attend for the past 2 years. So when I finally got the opportunity, I jumped on it. I was excited to see some of my favorite bands (Umphrey's McGee, Slightly Stoopid, Keller Williams, and moe.) along with several other acts that were new and funky
The entire weekend was such an amazing experience. Getting to be one with nature while listening to non-stop music for three days is unbelievably therapeutic. I also got to interact with so many new people and spend time with people out of their ordinary settings, which is always intriguing.
Besides the songs and the lyrics, the bands featured in the festival used various means to create an entertaining show and to get the audience involved. Light shows were a huge component to Summercamp. At night shows, the lights were all the rage. Some times, I found myself and other people focusing more on the light displays rather than the bands themselves. Plus, members of the audience constantly had glow sticks flying in the air and other light toys. There were also balloons and beach balls being tossed around at some shows.
The people in the audience were so carefree and nice and willing to have a good time. The fact that thousands of people were able to gather in such a hectic setting and yet not allow violence or conflict to get in the way absolutely baffles me. People were so fucked up on drugs and alcohol and other means the entire weekend I'm surprised I didn't see any fights.
But back to the music. The entire atmosphere of the weekend of Summercamp was so beautiful. Everyone was out to have a great time. Therefore, it makes sense that the music go right along with that attitude. With songs about good times, loving one another, and even songs that simply don't make sense, there were also many bands whose music was purely instrumental. These bands were simply there for people to get their groove on.
Overall, Summercamp is a a festival that must be experienced in order to fully grasp what I am trying to depict. I entered Summercamp as a music lover looking for a good time. I left with a weekend full of interesting experiences, new friends, and memories that will last a life time. Not to mention, a will to go back again and again and again. I cannot wait until summer 2011. Summercamp, here I come again!
