Well we arrived safely, did not get to see much of Doha (just the airport) and the flight across went well. I have to say how impressed we were with Qatar airways they really were superb and the long flights slipped by with constant snacks treats and the use of the onboard films and games.
Bangkok was full of nutters and every one of them drives a taxi! We trailed up and down looking for the best way to get to the hotel and in the end decided to barter for the best ride.. Now be warned they love to barter here. After starting at 1400 Baht for the ride and dancing around for a while eg: walking away and them chasing us. We finally got a taxi to the hotel for 500 Baht the driving here is what can only be described as 'Interesting' and the loonatics (which I am sure I will join soon) that ride mopeds are like daredevils - they seem to carry half the house an the back and sometimes objects that stick way out at the side (photo's will follow)
I guess the hotel we have is a mid level one costing 2000 Baht a night which gave the cab driver 'Mr Boon' (oh yes its true) a near heart attack as we practiced our Thai on him and learnt a few new! Words too. But on arrival we were greeted by a man to carry our bags and welcome drink, we had our bags carried up and were shown to our room. It has wooden floors and a balcony and a bath which is a very welcome sight.
Showers were probably the first things on our mind after the flight what with being sticky smelly travellers and all. I couldn't wait to get into my bag and spruce up a bit. But..... wait a minute!! This bag looks the same, it feels the same and it too has a lock on it, however this lock is working and I can't get into it. That's right! i got the wrong bloody bag. Now imagine how stupid you feel 50 minutes from the airport waiting for a shower stinking like a sewer and looking at a label that says Antoinette blahblahblah I am not a happy bunny!! I wonder if I really need my bag at all or whether Antoinette indeed has some clothes in there that would do for the trip (Hey! It is Thailand) but then decide to go back to the airport and see what I can do - I do not really have much in my bag as we are travelling semi-light but my tart stuff is in there and its a few pounds worth so off I run. Now I'm going it alone back to the airport into the madness of taxi drivers and bartering to find my bag with what little Thai I know and my fingers crossed.
My Bag trip
My taxi driver this time agreed to a 900 Baht round trip and it was a scream, we sang along to Tom Jones and made a band with him on guitar and me on drums miming and singing along to whatever came on the radio, it was kind of surreal and one of those moment you look back on with fondness, I got my bag and we got back in record time taking the flyway (oh I'm so sorry about that text! Hels Heehhee) and all in all although I feel stupid and embarrassed about my mistake losing my bag added to the adventure and gave me a story to tell as well as a further view into the Thai way of doing thing, and given the chance If you asked me if would do the same thing again. You can sod off!!
Khaosan Road (Tanon Khaosan)
Our hotel gives free Tuk Tuk (wait for it) rides to Khaosan road which is like a road with wall to wall markets and stalls. A Tuk Tuk is like a motorbike with a sofa on the back and needs to be experienced, they like a bit of horn beeping and cutting in and out of traffic and it was mighty fun if you survive it.
The market is a sight to see with its clothes stools, food sellers, nik nak stalls and tailors that will knock you up the full set of shirt tie and suit for around £60- £70 we saw some interesting T-shirts 'A Blowjob is better than no job' was my favourite (I'll wear it tomorrow - only kidding) and some delightful food like Pad Thai (chicken noodles) and grasshopper which we will be trying soon. At each interval we get to try out our Thai and realise just how far we still have to go to even get by in the market, and tomorrow its real shopping..
