Talked to my dad before I left Athens and he really urged me to go see ancient Delphi. He said it was one of his favorite spots on his Euro trip when he was my age. Caught the 4 hour bus from Athens, through the mountains to Delphi. On the bus I met two french girls who kept me company for the rest of my time there.
Set up my tent at the campgrounds and headed back to visit the monuments. Started in the museum, then worked my way to Apollo's temple, the treasury, the theater, the stadium and then down to Athena's temple and the gymnasium. Delphi was one of the most holy sites to the ancient Greeks. It was home to the Delphi oracle and was also considered the center of the world. The Delphi oracle advised leaders from ancient Greece on many matters ranging from trade to war. Many great leaders, including Alexander the Great sought her advice because she was thought to speak for the gods. Also, legend has it that Delphi is the center of the world because Zeus released two eagles that flew around the world and they met at the temple of Apollo in Delphi.
One of my highlights was exploring a tunnel that lead underneath the temple of Apollo. Although no one knows exactly where the Oracle sat, they know it was in front of a cave; I imagined that I was crawling through this cave. Who knows? Maybe I was an oracle for a few minutes...
