I had a great coach ride through the night from cairns to townsville with beautifully dark landscapes and time for me to reflect on events just past, save for the fact that i was in shorts and it was freezing cold. It was at the stop off point that I realised I had forgotten to eat for the entire day save for one bottle of mango green tea, hence a fancy treat to battered fish and wedges. cold, soggy but mmm mmm. After eating that in the small stop over cafe, I crossed the bruce highway to the side lining the sea. Drizzling, thundering, I stood there at the platform just taking in the beauty of the lightening illuminating the entire beach. The energy of it all just ran through my body. this was way better than skydiving. And so I stood there, waiting for jolt after jolt, until it was time for me to go.
I arrived in townsville at 12midnight. bad as hell idea to not get a confirmed booking if you're arriving at such a dodgy time. but i ended up on a lady driver cab and drove around looking for a single open place. the hotels and motels were all totally booked out because Elton john, yes the candle in the wind, was heading down to townsville tuesday (today) and so everyone flocked from all around to watch this man sing. I finally ended up in the only place which looks partially open and with some lights, and so i thankfully dropped off. Little did I know I actually left my handphone, int. student card and hosteling card on the cab! Panic. and worst still, i didnt know what my australian number was! but thanks to my sister almighty, I got the number back and stood in the streets calling my phone. but that was needless cause as i was ringing the phone, the lady came back and gave me that half smile. she wasnt exactly the friendliest person you might encounter, but honest all the same and for that I'm thankful. It was probably the desperate dire state I was in that made her return it to me. Thank you lady.
And so there I was in the dead of the night in a place which benches were littered with beer cans and bottles and an empty domino pizza box. And one room with people up drinking and having some darkly lighted gathering. The place had a huge (dirty) kitchen though and a dimly lighted entertainment room. And in that room was my base for the night. On a dingy little couch hiding behind the pillar, I sank into that seat and tried my best not to freak out at every little sound I heard. It helped that they had 3 arcade games though, but shooting deers in canada and drift racing a car was expensive and I quickly ran out of coins. However I have to thank modern technology for a phone call helped me get through the night. :)
