Another nine hour day of driving with an overnight stop in San Juan del Rio. Highlights would be passing the tallest peak in Mexico (Pico de Orizaba), and enjoying the splendor of the high desert landscape. Only one picture is needed as it never really changes.

The first time we stopped in San Juan del Rio on the way to the Gulf Coast we stayed in a nice hotel. Opting to save a few bucks, this time we took a room at the hotel down the street (bad idea). First, we noticed the missing toilet seat (in a mildly disgusting bathroom where the shower sprays the whole room) and the mattresses with spiked springs. Next, we left for dinner and returned to find a cockroach sitting on top of my backpack (ick! - it was a very dramatic momement!). Figuring "what else could there be?" we watched a movie (the Anniversary Party, totally worth a rent) and started getting ready for bed. It was then that I noticed a redish-brownish film that coated the wall over the bed complete with particulate matter. I don't want to write what my guess to this substance was but suffice it to say this was the most disgusting, foul hotel I've ever stayed in overnight. It makes the place from Monterrey look like the Ritz Carlton. I awoke after a fitful sleep (in my sleeping bag, I wasn't touching anything in this hell-hole) at 5:30 a.m. thinking the sun was up because of the glaring flourescent light pouring through the window. It didn't matter, 15 minutes later we were on the road and out of there!
