Lovely (but sinking) city of Venice..

We only had time for a quick stop in Venice, but did our best to cram as much in as possible, a loooooong day.
Firstly a Gondola ride, the Romance of it all was a bit overwhelming as Tracey, several other girls and I, went around in a Gondola. It was nice and relaxing though. Im not really into glassmaking, but we stopped and watched a demonstration of some Murano glass being shaped. Its very pretty stuff and amazing how deftly they can twist the glass into what shape they like, but some of it is very pricey. Just a window shop for me! We wandered around the Doges Palace, and got to walk the walk the Bridge of Sighs is supposedly named for. The story goes that the prisoners were carted across their little enclosed prisoner bridge and the last thing they saw before entering the prison was the Bridge outside. So they would sigh for all they were leaving behind and hence the name. There is a tower on Piazza San Marco (the main square) that gives great views over Venice. The tower fell down many years ago and after much arguing over what to replace it with, they ended up replacing it with an almost replica of what was there originally. At night we went over to Rialto bridge, the biggest in Venice and were admiring the view. As you admire the view it is too easy to forget you are in a place that's also renowned for its pickpockets. Until you feel that gentle tap on your thigh, luckily Tracey had been minding all my stuff, so all that pickpocket got was a feel of my jacket - it's a very nice Jacket though!
