Cafayate is the center of northern Argentina's wine region and produces the really nice Malbec red (from high altitude grapes) and the quite succulent Torrientes, a white (I normally am not a fan of whites but for this fruity yet smooth concoction I had to make an exception). A Lovely little town with the typical quaint central square dominated by a towering cathedral its nice to explore for a few hours or maybe even a day but the real gem lies with the surrounding countryside filled with colorful canyons, cacti, grape vines, parakeet's and the Tropic of Capricorn photo op.
Coming down from Salta one drives through a series of badlands that give way to colorful red/blue/brown/silver hills due to Iron, cooper, sulfur and other sediments in the earth and finally through the twisting Queberdra and its rock formations such as the monk, Devils Gate, The Frog, The Titanic and a giant hole where a meteorite struck a few hundred years ago. I Spent the whole day exploring this American Southwest like landscape before arriving in Cafayate and wine tasting and enjoying amongst the areas many vineyards.
