Entry 22 of 24 | show all | print this entry

Hello, just a short one this time.
After a couple of days where we knew we should be leaving Saigon but couldn't be bothered we finally set of towards the island today. We got a taxi to the bus station that we had been told did busses to Rach Gia, the port town from which you get a boat to Phu Quoc island (think thats how you spell it but aint got the book with me so not sure). We arrived at the station to be greeted by about twenty stalls selling tickets, each with a minimum of three people leaning desperately out and screaming at us for there tickets, and after a random pick we bought our tickets and followed the guy round the back to the vehicle. At this point we realised that we had inadvertantly bought tickets for a mini-bus and not the local bus we wanted but thpought bugger it and against our better judgement and past experience we got in.
The trip started out ok as although we were forced to sit on the back seat with two opther people we still had a seat each and it wasn't too hot. Then about an hour into the journey we stopped to let on what i ncan only assume was the brother of one of the drivers on and they decided the only feasible option was to bang him on the back seat with the two forigners who no doubt payed treble what everyone else on their did anyway. Wewere both boiling hot and very cramped but decided to make a joke out of it and not let it bother us. After a stop we tried to make a stand and refuse to let the guy sit back down but they couldn't understand the word hello between the whole 18 odd paople on the bus so we just got a lot of confused screaming at us in Vietnamese and eventually gave up. A couple of unco0mfortable hours later someone got out so we were left with a seat each again anyway and decided just to count our blessings.
When we got to the town itself we were dropped off at the bus station on the edge of town, we were immediately surrounded by a group of about ten moto drivers and being as there is no taxi's in the town we took one each to a hotel where were staying before going on the early morning boat tomorow.
After we had dropped our stuff off at the hotel we went in search of somewhere to eat. Now i don't mean to be fuunny but the whole town is a complete dump, can't wait to leave. It is noce to be oneof the only white people about though and once again were the star attraction for the local children, a group of which are playing around my seat as i speak and repeatedly poking the funny white guy in the back, sweet.
Anyway have an early start tomorow morning plus i just checked the football and found out that England lost to Croatia last night and failed to qualify for the euro cup so bit gutted and gonna say goodbye for now.
