We started with a stop at Sorriana, a very large supermarket in Victoria, much like Meijers or Walmart. In Tampico, there were many US chain stores like KFC, Applebees, Burger King, Walmart and Sam's of course and many more.
The roads south of Tampico were horrendous, full of pot holes and whole sections where they appeared to be ground out, but not yet resurfaced and the usual topes. We were down to 15 MPH at some places. Semi Trucks passed us on a double yellow line. The trucks are huge down here, some are doubles that are 120 feet long. The edge of the road is often 12" straight down. You don't want to go off the road. This was much different from yesterday where the roads were newer, replaced after the hurricane season of 2005.
The good news is that we have truly entered the tropical zone, everything is very lush. We saw the living fence, where the fence posts begin to sprout and grew as tall as high as 24 feet. There are flowers and flowering bushes everywhere. I took a lot of pictures in the town of Cerro Azul because we were driving so slow. It is said that there are 19 topes in the town. We lost count. Topes are speed bumps, the Mexicans use them to slow the traffic down, it works!
More good news, the gas is 7.01 pesos per liter. That is about $1.85 US. Diesel is even cheaper.
