Our party ended up being nine strong, the aforementioned Dutch, another pair of Scandanavian youngsters and three Australians, (nouveau variety, originally from Fleetwood), more of whom later. Lifejackets secured, off we set. To say that the next tweny minutes or so was one of the most exhilarating/windy/wet/bumpy/white-knuckle inducing/frightening experiences wolud not be an understatement. The prime objective was simply staying in the boat. Interestingly, it seemed that the older ones coped better than the youngsters – certainly one of the girls found it hard going. Nevertheless, no-one was sick, and we arrived safely, if a little battered and bruised, at our first stop, Tulai Island, (Coral Island), for the first snorkelling opportunity. This appeared to be extremely enthusiastically received by all those partaking in it, everyone except for myself and Vincent. I understand that the colours of both the coral and the fish were astounding, certainly the water was crystal clear, offering marvellous views even from the boat itself. Much fun was had by all, as they clambered back aboard for the next spine-shuddering leg of the trip. This was to be to a beach cove with the whitest sand possible, and again, picture-postcard green/blue clear water.
Lunch at Salang resort, and the realisation that we had made a good choice with Paya – Salang was dirty, far too touristy and obviously one of the places to be if you were young and/or wished some sort of night-life. Lunch with our new best-friends from Australia, ironically Perth, (and Sydney in Vincent, the father's case), was just about ok, before it was time to enjoy the delights of the speedboat once more. Two more snorkelling opportunities, this time on Renggis Island and the Marine Park, enabled more fish and coral to be seen, before we made our way back to Paya Beach. Another fantastic day, and one that appears to have re-ignited an interest in snorkelling and scuba diving for Sara.
