Raymond Island was our next CS (CouchSurf) destination. To get to the island, we had to take a ferry that takes app. 1 minute to get to the other side. On first sight, it looks more like crossing a river. Rufus enjoyed his first trip over the water, towards the house of our host Peter. At our arrival, we were wildly welcomed by his 2 big dogs and after a short tour through the smeerboel, he invited us to go koala spotting. Just a few hundred meters from his house we already saw the first koala, soon followed by many other koala's and kangaroo's. Beautiful!
The next morning we did our own spotting: big spider Marcel in the bathroom. That works beter than coffee! Iris kept on going back to follow every movement of our new friend ("I don't mind him, I just wanna know where he is"), but after our day trip he disappeared and after that we kept on scanning everywhere everytime we brushed our teeth.
We'd seen there was a big shed behind the house and later on Peter showed us what was in there: a whole miniature world of trains, his big hobby (our room was also full of trains in boxes waiting to be upgraded to the shed). He'd worked on it for many years already, building everything himself, from mountains to houses and train stations. He even had a story around every single object we could see. A little boy's dream!
Peter also took us to an ancient Aboriginal site, the Den of Nargun. He couldn't do the walk because of his health condition, but had a little nap in the car until we came back from this amazing walk through rainforests, rivers and big rock formations.
After that, Peter took us flake tasting. We had no idea what that was but were very curious about it. At the snackbar he ordered a few flakes, that looked like fried fish and tasted very smooth. Finally he told us it was shark meat. Well, that's a first (and a last)!
After two days we said goodbye to Peter, his toe-biting dogs and his koalaworld, and went back on the ferry for more adventures.
