On the Nam Ou river
Entry 25 of 43 | show all | print this entry |
I: Nong Khiaw is a small touristic town ( in Lao measures :) where we stayed only for two nights. The view over the Nam Ou river is excellent, but otherwise than that there's not too much to do there. We visited some caves where the locals were hiding during one of the many wars they've had here, and I ended up patching up a small lao boy when he fell head-first into the river (pictures will come, eventually). There were lots of foreigners in NK, and one side of the river was only filled with guest houses and restaurants for falangs. Too much for us...
To get to Nong Khiaw we took a boat from Muang Khua, and we were expecting really nice views - and we got them. Nice limestone cliffs in masses, and so many water buffalos chilling in the river (Palo just loves to take pictures of them). During the five-hour ride we stopped several times, even if we were the only passengers for the last three hours. In the beginning we had a really cute little girl with her mother riding with us. She looked a little feverish and her mum was feeding her some medicine, so we just had to like her even if she started crying every time me or Palo only looked at her... We ended up making some beer delivery on the way to some guys who looked very happy when the package arrived. And of course, in lao style, the engine of the boat broke down only one hour before arriving in Nong Khiaw, so we had to wait another half an hour for our driver to fix it. All in all the trip was really nice, though.
