The walk down to Wentworth Falls starts off peaceful enough , a downhill bushwalk of sorts if you will.a part of the walk sees you walk over the falls across giant stepping stones. this is a predictable photo opportunity to take a break, take some photos and take in the scenery. Nathan questioned why everyone returning back from the falls were wet unaware that the falls were the reason behind their slightly soaked appearances.
The walk proceeds to wrap itself around and down the side of the cliff . the walkway becomes narrow and with the wet conditions made it all the more difficult to navigate. the stairs narrow and lopsided and wet due to the rain earlier was an accident waiting to happen. i must admit it was also exciting for the abovementioned reasons. the cliff juts outwardly and drops straight down but due to the clouds it prevented us from seeing down creating a surreal, eerie feeling.
People frequently passed us on our way down, out of breath and out of sorts , simply sighing and wishing us luck, quick to point out that we were only halfway down yet reassuring us it was well worth it. i wondered why everyone was wishing us luck and then envisioned someone losing their footing and tumbling down the steep stairs. i shuddered and focus heavily on not falling ironically slipping several times.
i guess i was more preoccupied with the inevitable climb back up and began to question if in fact it really was worth it.
the roar of the waterfall gave sign that we were fast approaching and when the falls unveiled itself to us it was like being hit with far too much beauty that you dont quite know what to do with it all . beauty i simply cannot put into words and im not going to bother trying .
the climb back up almost killed me. i was actually a little upset by how unfit i was. leg muscles got a workout and seemed to at times cry out from pain in protest of the steep uphill climb. i paused sporadically which only served to deflated my interest in continuing and i was optioning rather to remain where i was and proceed no further. i pitied nameless faces who passed us on their way down , greeting them with sighs and forced smiles. i realized that i had become the very same people we passed earlier on our way down...the irony was not lost on me.
two german backpackers seemingly already over their descent down to the falls stopped us to ask how far away they were , me barely able to breathe let alone speak let Nathan answer them, which was "about halfway , the walk back up is the problem but its amazing and totally worth it".
it was like a script for fellow walkers alike to pass on to unsuspecting ones travelling down , it was bizarre like experiencing reverse deja'vu.
i was momentarily brought to a stop when a guy ahead of me slipped and fell down a couple of steps - at that point pitching a tent and not taking another step seemed like a cosy option to me but i knew if i stopped longer than 5mins it would take hours for me to return to the top.
the light rain that started to fall earlier had ceased and clouds started to dissipate and by the time we reached the top the sun was out and it felt like a different day. a small tour group were about to embark on their walk and upon seeing i simply laughed.
it was a relief to be back at the top where we started , looking down at where we were i was amazed at how far the falls were and in slight shock & amazement.
