After ten straight days of madness, we needed someplace to relax and recuperate. Paraty was just what the proverbial doctor ordered. A small beach town four hours south of Rio, Paraty was founded way back in the 1600s when it was an essential stop for the shipping lanes between Europe and Sao Paolo. The distinct colonial Portuguese architecture remains, as do the cobblestone streets. Our hostel was situated directly on the beach, allowing us to stumble a few steps out the front door, plop down on the sand, and read/sleep/swim the days away. Because Paraty is surrounded by islands, the water is always calm and lukewarm. One day we took a boat cruise out to a few of the nearby islands. One night in the center of town we stood and watched a big drum circle rehearsing for Carnival. Another night we sat in a small circle and chatted with some new friends on the beach. Thankfully, nothing else happened. Nothing else at all.
