I knew almost nothing of Montevideo--it seems almost no one outside of Uruguay does--and thus had no expectations. But I was charmed at once. Sure it's tiny and there isn't much to do there, but it's got a lot of character. There are nice beaches. There are quaint little streets that don't allow auto traffic, lined with shops and street merchants.

One street in particular, Bartolomé Mitre, is full of pubs and sidewalk cafes. We had dinner at an Irish pub called Shannon's where a band (a father and his two sons) where playing acoustic covers of Pink Floyd and The Who. That is where we met Daniel, a Uruguayan gonzo journalist with long shaggy hair and an unbuttoned Hawaiian shirt. He'd spent 28 years working for NPR in D.C.; sent on assignment to El Salvador during the civil war in 1980 and to South Africa to cover the Zulu massacres in 1992. He was a real wild man, also very funny and sincere. Now at the age of 58, he said his life was starting to slow down a bit. He was inspired by our travel plans and for some reason kept saying, "I like you guys! You guys are sick perverts, man!" For two hours Daniel passed along pieces of wisdom that he had learned over the course of his life. My favorite was that a guy should never settle down with a woman unless she "knows how to do quantum" in the bedroom. I have absolutely no idea what that means, but Mikeo and I have been repeating it over and over for the last few days. Daniel asked for the web address to my travel blog, so Daniel if you're reading this, we promise to heed your life advice, to associate only with women who know how to do quantum, and generally behave like sick perverts at all times during our travels.
