Consisting of six main islands and 60 visitor sites, the Galapagos islands remain one of the most famous collection of wildlife know to man.
Nobody is really sure how animals came to inhabit the islands which lie 1000km from the Ecuadorian coast but their separation from the mainland has caused some incredible development in response from their unusual volcanic environment. Today, over 1/4 of the fish species and nearly all of the reptiles are found only on the Galapagos Islands - in addition to this, many of the islands themselves have their own subspecies which again have adapted to their surroundings.
Perhaps the greatest appeal to visitors however is the ability experience close contact to some of these incredible creatures. Hundreds of thousands of years without animal predators have resulted in a tameness unheard of elsewhere.
