Hola,

We are in Mexico. Instant LOVE for these people. A very early 5 hour flight to Cancun, Quintana Roo, Mexico today. We are here mainly to visit the archaeological ruin sites of Chichen Itza, Ek Balam and Coba, to see Mayan villages and culture and to laze around the Carribean at Tulum.

Cancun is ridiculously and horrendously touristy. The plane landing was completely surreal as we glided over the postcard perfect turqoise water. Cancun is filled with Americans on packaged holidays. Cancun is the Surfers Paradise and Tulum further south is the Byron Bay. We will visit the beach in Tulum so we headed straight downtown el centro to where the locals are to meet some Mexican cowboys. We stayed at Las Palmas Hostel in Palmera Street which had beautiful rooms and a lovely lady at the desk. We were exhausted but the lure of an active nitelife took us out again to explore.

We ate at a simple traditional Yucatan restaurant called La Tadita. We had a spicy chicken soup and chicken tacos with lettuce and radish. I had huge frozen margaritas, tequila and Nadine drank Sol beer. We then went to a local pub which had an alternative rock band playing with two guys dressed in AC=DC shirts beltīng out The Doors and U2 songs.

We've packed up our lives and it's all sinking in, we are finally on the road and will be living out of  a backpack for the next couple of years. Life is good. We are free. Considering we have just arrived, we decided to go out and celebrate the start of this journey, well, that was our excuse anyway. The hipsters and trendites all go out at around 12:30am. Alot of handsome gay bois and grrls were all dressed up and heading out downtown so we followed. We went to Disco Karamba 6 dollars (cannot find anything on this Spanish keyboard) which was a gay boi bar and very OUT. Lots of handsome bois. The club was glamourous and dark with large erotic artworks, plush lounges, chandeliers, podiums and lasers with big screens showing American film clips. The guys who came here had money. Then we cabbed it to Picante Club, a little bar where the dance floor was absolutely filled with gyrating men dancing to Mexican techno. We were told about a place called The Sky Box which is new and plays psytrance music so we had to go of course. This place was superb. It was up some stairs onto a rooftop bar above the city. There was a DJ spinning hard on top of a tower up in the sky hence the name and everybody was dancing and moving, a throng of people in unison. There was a spa bath too and a huge screen with coloured visuals. We drank Mexican beer Majito? not the cocktail. We went to a street stall and ate chorizo and chicken tacos, safe enough cause they are welll cooked and all the locals are eating them. While we were talking to the street stall owner  in broken English a car load of military type police got out of their van with machine guns and bought some tacos too. There are lots of tourist and usual police around so the streets are kept safe. We left  at 4am and went back to the hotel after way too many strong tequilas. The woman at the desk stayed up all nite and let us in and out a few times, god love her. The Sky Box pumped out that music till 7am the mad mexican party animals they are.

Baby monkey is well happy to be on this journey with us even though he decided to come at the last minute.

We go inland to Merida tomorrow
