Despite the storm our train from Helsinki to Rovaniemi was delayed only for an hour. That was a pleasant surprise actually, because some trains were delayed for many hours. Aino joined us in Tampere. She had been waiting for the train there for more than two hours, but she almost lost it... She was helping two traveler girls, whose flight to London was cancelled.... Well, she did catch the train and our journey began.

We slept well in the train and the next morning we woke up in Rovaniemi. Or actually we woke up a little earlier, in Kemi, but soon we were in Rovaniemi. There were no announcements in the train, though, not in any language. So in Rovaniemi we just guessed that this is it and got out. It was still snowing but not too much. We drunk some coffee and tea (in Arnolds the doughnut place...), took photos of ourselves at the Lordi Square, rented a Toyota Auris from Budget Car Rental and moved on, to North.

We drove past Santa Claus' Village. In the Arctic Circle turist village we did stop for awhile. Those kind of places are just so pointless that it's cool some way. If you have red American Gods by Neil Gaiman (I had that as my travel book in America, you can imagine that I focused on the most interesting stuff there) you know what I mean. In the book the Center of America is a very spiritual place. It's the same story with the Arctic Circle: it exists in the map but there is nothing there really. You can get "the original certificate of crossing the Arctic Circle" though. :)

Anyway, now we are officially in the North. It was so easy to come here. We are actually living very close to North in South of Finland, too, we just realized...

Now we are staying in the hotel called Lapinleuku. It's in Ivalo. (Avvil in Sami language) We are the only customers because it's off season. We have a really nice warm room, there is lots of snow and stars and darkness outside, and we will drink some tea and go to sauna before going to bed.

On our way to Ivalo we stopped for dinner in Sodankylä. The restaurant was called Kammari Ravintola. We ate hearings and smashed potatoes with Aino and Felix ate reindeer pasta. The food was good and Sodankylä's main road is called "Jäämerentie", the Arctic Ocean Road. Here we come.
