I'm going to medical school in California. It's hard to believe. California has something mythical about it. The land of beautiful weather and beautiful people, gorgeous beaches and stunning sunsets, redwood forests and 14,000 ft. peaks. When I started the medical school application a year ago, I told people I wanted to go to school in California. Why? I think I was feeling tired of living in Massachusetts, since I grew up here, went to college here, and spent the past two years working here. Of my 25 years, I have spent 23.5 of them in Massachusetts. So I was ready for a change. Yet, when the med school decisions finally came my way in February and March of this year, I began to have second thoughts about moving out west. Before I had been accepted to Stanford, it was easy to dream of going to California because it was just that, a DREAM. But now it's REAL. I'm actually doing this.
Here's the plan. A three week road trip from the East Coast to the West Coast. The goals of the trip are as follows:
1. To get myself to California. 2. To get my car to California. 3. To get my clothes and other personal belongings to California. 4. To see as much of the USA as possible along the way to California.
I'm starting at my parents' home in Greenfield, MA, where I will load up the car (a 2001 Toyota Corolla) with all my possessions. Then I'll drive to Cambridge where I will meet my friend Dan who will accompany me for the first two weeks of the trip.
